Head of English Programmes, Ethiopia

Role Purpose

The Head of English and School Education will support the development and delivery of a strategic English and School Education portfolio of partnerships, programmes, and contracts across mixed funding streams and business models in Ethiopia. They will ensure an overall balance of impact and financial sustainability, deliver country outcomes, and support the Country Director to ensure that benefit is achieved in Ethiopia and for the UK and is suitably communicated.

The role holder will lead the English and School Education portfolio of School Systems, Empowerment, and English Connects. They will lead contracts and programmes in-country, providing technical sector expertise, overseeing business development, and delivering quality, compliant implementation of programmes and contracts.

The role holder will share knowledge, expertise, and best practices from the country with the regional and global English and School Education teams and externally.

Role-specific knowledge and experience:

Essential requirements:

  • Postgraduate Qualification in English, Education, Development studies, Project management, or related field.
  • Experience in managing education projects
  • Experience in delivering externally funded projects or programmes
  • Experience in overseeing monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) within projects and incorporating lessons learned from MEL into programmes and strategy
  • Experience in engaging with diverse stakeholders, including multilateral agencies, donors, government officials, and academics

Desirable:

  • TEFL-Q: a diploma level qualification in teaching English as a foreign/second language which meets accreditation UK requirements
  • A project management qualification
  • Experience in managing teacher education projects for English language teachers
  • Experience in managing school leadership support projects
  • Experience in managing online teacher education projects
  • Experience in writing for academic journals and presenting at international conferences
  • Experience in delivering client-funded projects or programmes
  • Experience in technical writing or budget development for client-funded programme proposals

Role-specific skills:

  • Able to lead on strategy and process development for innovative English/education solutions
  • Able to lead the development and implementation of quality standards for English/Education
  • Able to lead on strategy and commissioning of global thought leadership outputs, such as publications
  • Able to lead on relationships with the UK education sector

Further Information

  • Pay Band: 8
  • Contract Duration: Three (3) Year Fixed Term Contract
  • Contract Type: This role is being offered as a locally engaged and Long Term Strategic International Assignment (LTSIA) for Ethiopia.
  • Locally Engaged - Candidates for this role must have a natural right to work in this location and would normally already be based in the location.
  • Applications are welcomed from candidates currently based in other British Council country/territory offices. However, please note candidates must have a natural right to work in the country/territory, permanently, as immigration clearance and/or ongoing visa support is not provided by the British Council for this role. Relocation support is also not provided. If you are an international assignee currently working in this location under a British Council-sponsored visa, this does not provide a natural right to work.
  • LTSIA - This role will be offered on long-term strategic international assignment terms which includes visa and transfer support and benefits such as assignment allowances, housing and utilities, and schooling. Please note Visa approvals are beyond the British Council’s control so any job offer will be subject to securing the required right to work. The full International Assignment package is offered at the discretion of the British Council and may not be available to candidates who are currently already based in another location but have significant connections to the host location. Applications for locally hired candidates are welcome but if successful will not qualify for the international assignment package and will continue on local terms and conditions of service.
  • Candidates applying from outside the British Council's operating countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) will be hired under LTSIA terms. Candidates hired under LTSIA terms will be based in Ethiopia. Relocation support will be provided in this case.
