Child Safeguarding:

Level 3: the role holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work in country programs; or are visiting country programs; ore because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

ROLE PURPOSE:

The purpose of this role is to provide essential support to Save the Children’s emergency programs in Somal, focusing on promoting accountability to beneficiaries to empower communities and obtain feedback on SC UK projects leading to improved quality and impact. The incumbent will work very closely with the MEAL Coordinator as well as all concerned project staff and project beneficiaries in establishing accountability mechanisms.

Dimensions: Save the Children works in - regions in Ethiopia with a current staff complement of approximately - staff and current expenditure of approximately $90+ million each year

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Job Description

  • Manages the project unit's implementation of the nutrition program in agreement with the overall IYCF Program activities according to SCI and national standards.
  • Makes sure that the IYCF program is implemented according to the National protocol i.e. application of the admission and discharge criteria, closely monitors and strictly follows anthropometry measurement
  • Facilitates the training under the project regarding IYCF
  • Supports and liaises with the health center staff and provides on-the-job training and capacity building.
  • Select and establish counselors from the health facilities and the community.
  • Establishment and strengthening of MTM support groups, training them, and close follow-up for supporting IYCF_E promotion activities.
  • Strengthening BFC at targeted health facilities
  • Assess and diagnose difficulties of feeding for all PLWs coming for other services, for screening, and at the community.
  • Provide day-to-day one-to-one and group counseling for PLW regarding IYCF practices.
  • Makes sure that the health staff have adequate training on providing proper IYCF counseling
  • Conduct formative assessment for key behaviors and skills for IYCF develop culturally appropriate and effective IEC materials and adapt it to the day-to-day counseling.
  • Ensures the availability of job aids, reporting formats, and all other supplies for IYCF.
  • Creates and maintains relationships with local health and other authorities and tries to link the IYCF program with the existing health structure smoothly,
  • Makes sure that health professionals from the health facilities participate in the daily routine work for sustainability and smooth phase-out strategy,
  • Provides technical support and training where required to all team members, and outreach team including health extension workers and community volunteers,
  • Works and liaise with any local health workers to integrate the IYCF program from the start,
  • Organizes monthly report of community mobilization, IYCF, and report on time to the Sr. CMAM Officer, and provides updates when needed.
  • Report any problems promptly to the Woreda Health and Nutrition Lead,
  • Upholds the image and values of SC at all times,
  • Performs other related tasks as required and tasks assigned by the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • BSc/College Diploma in Nursing and/or other health-related fields.
  • At least Four years of working experience in the field out of which two years of NGO experience in a related field
  • Experienced in nutrition and health program implementation –data collection and compilation, working with counterparts for lasting intervention, training of health workers, etc.
  • Good written and spoken ability in the local language
  • Extremely flexible, able to work independently, and have the ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations.
  • Interest in and ability to work in a team.
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work in remote and potentially insecure environments.

Desirable

  • Awareness of international accountability standards including HAP (Humanitarian Accountability Partnership) and a demonstrated commitment to promoting these standards in ways of working and project implementation.
  • Experience working with an international NGO in the Somali region.
  • Experience in social work in local communities.
  • Experience in effectively communicating findings to internal/external stakeholders.
  • Experience in child-friendly accountability systems.
  • Previous experience of working in an emergency context.
