Job Summary
The Field Assistant and Driver is responsible for providing reliable transportation services and administrative support to field operations. The role supports Field Coordinators and project staff through safe driving, messenger services, dispatch coordination, logistics assistance, small cash handling, and field-level operational support to ensure efficient implementation of project activities.
Key Responsibilities
Driving Responsibilities
- Operate organization vehicles within the country, including Orbis field areas.
- Prepare vehicles for operation by conducting regular inspections and ensuring readiness before trips.
- Plan vehicle requirements based on office schedules and transportation requests.
- Complete vehicle log sheets accurately and consistently as required by the organization.
- Maintain records of vehicle servicing, maintenance, and repairs.
- Ensure vehicles remain in good working condition, with special attention to vehicle checks before field travel.
- Follow national traffic laws, regulations, and organizational driving policies.
- Immediately report road accidents to supervisors and relevant authorities and collect required documentation for insurance claims and further action.
- Identify vehicle problems, perform basic maintenance where possible, and report major issues for external repair.
- Maintain safe driving practices and prioritize passenger and vehicle safety at all times.
Field Assistant Responsibilities
- Deliver office messages, documents, and dispatches as required.
- Support payment of small bills and petty cash transactions as instructed by supervisors.
- Maintain complete records of assigned vehicles and related documentation for the field office.
- Assist field staff with routine operational activities, including logistics arrangements, training materials preparation, and coordination support.
- Support trainings and field activities involving Integrated Eye Care Workers (IECWs), Health Extension Workers (HEWs), volunteers, community health agents, school teachers, and other stakeholders involved in blindness prevention programs.
- Assist Logistics & Transport Coordinator, Project Manager, and Field Coordinators during Mass Drug Distribution activities by coordinating with partners, transport providers, facilitators, and beneficiary communities.
- Support field-level logistics requirements, including small procurements, material handling, and safe custody of supplies and equipment.
- Receive and maintain custody of payment vouchers, receipt vouchers, bank statements, and related financial documents.
- Process project-related payments and submit supporting documents to the assigned Finance and Administration Officer or finance team members for settlement.
- Support monthly tax settlement processes and submit relevant documents to the assigned finance personnel.
- Collect bank statements and cash transfer advice from financial institutions.
- Provide general office assistant services whenever required.
- Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Duty Stations
Addis Ababa, Arbaminch, Hawassa, Dilla, Tercha, Bonga, KAT, Hadya, and Wolaiita field offices as required.
Qualifications
- Completion of 12th grade education.
- Minimum 3rd grade driving license.
Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of vehicle driving experience.
- Practical experience providing field-level assistance and support.
- Experience with safe driving practices and vehicle safety procedures.
Required Skills
- Good knowledge of driving safety practices and road regulations.
- Ability to maintain vehicle records and basic documentation.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to provide effective field support and work with different teams.
- High level of responsibility, reliability, and integrity.
- Ability to work under field conditions and travel when required.
