Purpose of Job
Africa CDC is a specialized institution of the African Union that supports public health initiatives across member states. It strengthens the capacity of health institutions to detect, prevent, and respond effectively to disease threats.
Main Functions
The Principal Technical Officer will coordinate epidemic intelligence programs, including surveillance systems, disease modeling, and outbreak response, while ensuring sustainability and effective implementation.
Specific Responsibilities
- Coordinate development and implementation of continental surveillance strategies and policies.
- Provide technical expertise in planning, budgeting, and execution of disease intelligence programs.
- Guide epidemic intelligence programs, including surveillance systems and outbreak response.
- Coordinate implementation of the Event-Based Surveillance framework.
- Collaborate with AU agencies, partners, and stakeholders to align strategies.
- Support adoption of the Africa CDC Event Management System.
- Advise on public health resource allocation and preparedness capacity.
- Engage and secure funding and technical partners.
- Represent the unit at continental and global forums.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Academic Requirements and Experience
- Master’s degree in Public Health or related field with 10 years of experience, including leadership roles.
- OR Bachelor’s degree with 12 years of experience, including supervisory roles.
- Experience in public health surveillance programs at national or regional levels.
- Experience working in Africa is an added advantage.

Tenure of Appointment
The appointment will be for eleven (11) months, including a three (3) month probation period. Renewal is subject to performance and funding availability.
