FAWE Ethiopia Chapter is part of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), an organization dedicated to promoting gender equality in education. As a gender-focused lead organization for the MYRP II, FAWE Ethiopia will work to address the challenges faced by women and girls in regions affected by crisis and marginalization, promoting their empowerment, resilience, and access to education.

The MYRP II program aims to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities in Ethiopia, particularly focusing on gender-sensitive approaches to education, child protection, and socio-economic empowerment. The Program Officer will play a critical role in ensuring that gender equality and women's empowerment are at the core of program activities in Amhara, Somali, and Tigray regions.

Position Purpose:

The Project Officers will serve as the Gender Lead for the MYRP II program in Tigray region. This role is responsible for overseeing the integration of gender-sensitive approaches throughout the program implementation in the regions. The Project Officer will ensure that the project targets the unique challenges faced by women and girls in these regions, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met.

Key Responsibilities:

Closely work with gender specialist to;

1. Mainstream Gender and ensure Strategy Development:

  • Lead the design and implementation of gender-sensitive strategies within MYRP II, ensuring alignment with program objective and goal and the specific needs of women and girls in the target regions.
  • Provide technical expertise to integrate gender equality in all stages of the program lifecycle, including assessment, planning, execution, and monitoring.
  • Facilitate and coordinate all Gender related data collection Gender analysis safety Audit ,Protection and GBV related data at grass root level
  • Conduct gender analysis and ensure that program activities are responsive to the local gender dynamics and priorities.
  • Incorporate any concerns about gender protection safety issues into the assessment by coordinating with other local partner organizations (Women lead and other )

2. Build Capacity:

  • Design and deliver facilitate and coordinate training, workshops, and capacity-building sessions on gender equality, women’s empowerment, Gender Responsive Pedagogy and gender-sensitive programming for program staff, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Strengthen the gender capacity of local partners, including schools, community groups, and government agencies involved in the program.

3. Monitor and Report:

  • Monitor the progress of gender-related program activities at and outcomes, ensuring adherence to gender standards and best practices.
  • monitor observe school based construction ,Renovation, Play based materials and wash facilities Girls Clubs ,PTAs are disaggregated by sex including that ensure the enrolment of girls, boys, and send the data to the HO Gender specialist
  • Regularly Collect and analyze gender-specific data to measure program impact and report on gender-related progress from partners, stakeholders school community, PTAs and others and send to the HO Gender specialist and Program Manager
  • Observe, oversee on school-based construction, renovation, play-based materials, and wash facilities. PTAs and girls clubs are disaggregated by sex, including to guarantee that boys and girls are enrolled, and the information is sent to the HO Gender Specialist.
  • Establish strengthen; Create a more robust Girls Club and Forum at every target school level.
  • At the school level, monitor the overall application and coordination of the Tesume Model and gender-responsive pedagogy.
  • Ensure timely and quality reporting in compliance with donor requirements, highlighting gender-specific challenges, achievements, and recommendations.
  • Compile a monthly, quarterly, and annual report after gathering, organizing, and summarizing data, then forward it to the HO Gender specialist.

4. Advocate for Policy Engagement

  • Advocate for gender-sensitive policies, practices, and budgets at the regional and national levels, ensuring that women and girls are prioritized in the program.
  • Engage with local authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Represent FAWE Ethiopia in gender-focused forums, networks, Workshop, event and working groups at the regional and national levels.

5. Ensure Community Engagement and Outreach:

  • Engage with communities, particularly women and girls, to ensure their needs, voices, and priorities are central to program implementation.
  • Facilitate the establishment of community-based gender support systems, such as women’s groups and youth-led advocacy initiatives,
  • Facilitate school based plat form Girls club, Girls forum , Student union to create a safe space for Girls
  • In order to address the underlying causes of gender inequality (marriage, abduction, harmful traditional practices, and gender-based violence school based GBV and to address SRHR Issues organize and lead awareness-raising events, campaign at the school and community levels.
  • Promote gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response mechanisms within program activities.
  • Track school-level dropout rates among girls and improve retention by working with local women-led organizations, government officials, religious institutions, and others to address dropouts among girls and improve retention.

6. Build Collaboration and Partnership:

  • Build strong relationships and collaborate with other actors in the field, including UN agencies, local NGOs, government bodies, and community organizations, to promote gender equality in program delivery.
  • Participate in the available Education cluster protection, Protection cluster, PSHEA (Protection, Sexual Harassment ,Exploitation and Abuse networks), and Protection Working Group by representing FAWE at regional zonal and woreda level cluster coordination meetings.
  • Contribute to the coordination of joint activities with other gender and development-focused stakeholders.

7. Ensure the commencement of Gender Research and Learning if needed:

  • Lead or support research initiatives related to gender, women’s empowerment, and education in the context of the MYRP II program.
  • Document lessons learned, best practices, and innovative approaches to gender mainstreaming and share with the broader FAWE network and partners.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Education, or related fields. A Master’s degree is an added advantage.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of proven experience in gender programming, women’s empowerment, or related areas in Ethiopia.
  • Familiarity with the Tigray regions and an understanding of the sociocultural context is highly desirable.
  • Strong experience in gender analysis, gender-sensitive project design, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Experience working with international development organizations, NGOs, and government agencies is preferred.

Language: Tigrgna and Amharic is mandatory (English being the working language)

Skills:

  • Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in multicultural and remote settings.
  • Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Being fluent in English (written and spoken) and proficient in local languages (Amharic, Somali, Tigrinya) is highly desirable.
