The ISS seeks to appoint a dynamic and motivated intern based in Addis Ababa to support implementing activities on the rule of law and accountability. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful research and analysis on the rule of law and transitional justice. The selected candidate will gain valuable experience working for a reputable organization on national, regional, and continental peace and security.

Overview of duties

  • Assist in researching topics related to the rule of law and transitional justice in Africa, the Horn of Africa, and Ethiopia
  • Assist in organizing events
  • Assist with planning, communication, and coordination
  • Assist with administration and logistics
  • Undertake other activities assigned by the Head of Special Projects and a senior researcher in Addis Ababa

Overview of requirements

  • A Postgraduate degree in law (e.g. human rights, criminal justice, international criminal law, international humanitarian law or public international law) or the social sciences (e.g. public policy, sociology, political science or criminology or transitional justice)
  • Good research and analytical skills, with an interest in Africa's peace and conflict dynamics, transitional justice and rule of law
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Computer literacy, working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite and data analysis software (e.g. Excel, SPSS or R) is advantageous
  • Organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work on multiple tasks
  • Enthusiasm for teamwork and collaboration in a dynamic, multicultural environment

The contract will be for six (6) months, and a monthly stipend will be offered.
