The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide opportunities for governance work in Ethiopia. Through its Strategic Plan, UNDP aims to "future-proof" governance systems, affirming that inclusive and accountable governance is crucial for sustainable development.
The governance and peacebuilding flagships are rooted in UNDP’s Renewed Governance and Peacebuilding Framework for Africa (2022 - 2025), which focuses on:
- People-centered, human rights-based governance
- Strengthened trust between states and citizens
In collaboration with the Government of Ethiopia (GoE), UNDP aims to enhance capacities for open, inclusive democratic governance and promote human rights. The new Country Programme Document (2025 - 2030) emphasizes inclusivity and tangible benefits for vulnerable groups.
Position Purpose
The Team Leader, Democratic Governance and Peacebuilding (DGP), will:
- Take a “whole-of-governance, whole-of-office” approach.
- Lead UNDP’s work in democratic governance and peacebuilding.
- Provide technical support to democratic institutions and advocate for priorities with UN agencies.
Key Functions
- Lead and Coordinate Implementation: Ensure quality assurance from formulation to reporting.
- Provide Policy Analysis and Technical Advisory Services: Advise UNDP Management on context and emerging challenges.
- Resource Mobilization: Lead efforts to identify funding opportunities.
- Facilitate Communication and Knowledge Management: Ensure visibility of development partners and UNDP.
- Lead the DGP Unit Team: Manage human resources effectively.

Minimum Education Requirements
- Advanced university degree in relevant fields (e.g., Governance, Law, Political Science).
Minimum Work Experience
- 7 years with a Master's or 9 years with a Bachelor's in governance-related issues.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in governance, peacebuilding, and project management.
- Ability to advise on governance and institutional strengthening.
- Experience engaging with high-level counterparts and development partners.
Desired Skills
- Expertise in inclusive governance reforms.
- Experience in conflict prevention and peacebuilding initiatives.
Required Languages
- Excellent knowledge of English and Amharic; fluency in the local duty station language.
