Summary

The U.S. Mission in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Guard Trainer.

The work schedule for this position is: Full Time (48 hours per week)

Start date: Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time (4 weeks) of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

Duties

The Local Guard Force (LGF) Trainer provides security for Embassy personnel and facilities by planning and implementing required training for a local guard program to detect, deter, respond, and report potential criminal and terrorist acts directed against U.S. Government personnel and facilities.  Training includes an 80-hour LGF basic curriculum approved by the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), annual 16-hour refresher training, practical field training, and in-service instruction in support of LGF programs to ensure that LGF personnel are proficient and knowledgeable of Embassy, RSO, and HR policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Qualifications and Evaluations

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of three years experience in the military, as a police officer or as a security guard is required. 

EDUCATION: High School / Secondary School diploma is required

LANGUAGE:

  • Level III (Good Working Knowledge) in written/reading and spoken Amharic is required. (This may be tested)

  • Level III (Good working knowledge) written /reading and spoken English are required. (This may be tested)

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Ability to understand the security control panel and to operate emergency alarms and the public address system.
  • Ability to use state-of-the-art security and radio communication equipment.
  • Ability to use Automated External Defibrillator. 
  • Ability to use a fire extinguisher.
  • Ability to use personal protective equipment (i.e. PR-24, straight batons, pepper spray, handcuffs, and flexi cuffs, etc.).
  • Daily duties may involve extended periods of walking and/or standing in a wide variety of weather conditions. Ability to work flexible shift schedules, including nights, days, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle. 
  • Must possess a 3rd grade or public driving license is required.
  • Must effectively react to various incidents.
  • Must be able to independently take action as necessary depending on the nature of incidents outlined in guard orders. 
  • Must be able to communicate with persons from all socioeconomic classes.
  • Must be familiar with dispute mediation tactics to ease potentially dangerous security situations.
  • Must be proficient in presentation techniques and instructional strategies.
  • Must also be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint. 
  • Coordinates Embassy-wide drills with Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) First Responder Team, RSO, Medical Unit, and the Marine Security Guard Detachment to ensure a coordinated response with LGF personnel at posts. (This may be tested)

* IMPORTANT:  Applicants who claim status as a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran must submit a copy of their most recent DD-214 (“Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”), equivalent documentation, or certification.  A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant. The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service.  Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given.
