Organization Setting and Reporting

ECA's mission is to deliver ideas and actions for an empowered and transformed Africa; informed by the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063.

The mission will be guided by ECA's five strategic directions which are: Advancing ECA's position as a premier knowledge institution that builds on its unique position and privilege to bring global solutions to the continent's problems and take local solutions to the continent; developing macroeconomic and structural policy options to accelerate economic diversification and job creation; designing and implementing innovative financing models for infrastructure, and for human, physical and social assets for a transforming Africa; contributing solutions to regional and transboundary challenges, with a focus on peace security and social inclusion as an important development nexus; advocating Africa's position at the global level and developing regional responses as a contribution to global governance issues.

This position is in the Publications, Conference and Knowledge Management Division (PCKMD), Publications and Conference Management Section (PCMS) of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The incumbent works under the overall guidance of the Chief of PCMS, and the direct supervision of the Chief of the French Translation and Editing Unit (FTEU).

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the French translator will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Translates, subject to revision, documents covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the ECA, i.e., social, economic, financial, administrative, scientific, and technical.
  • Services meetings of the Commission and those of the Sub-Regional Offices as part of a team and translates their report subject to revision.
  • Identifies new terminology material and submits it for consideration of the revisers.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Results Expected:

Provides accurate and complete translation of a wide range of documents as well as accurate and faithful summary records of meetings.

Education

  • A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required.
  • Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant United Nations Language Competitive Examination (LCE) for French: either the combined exam for translators/précis-writers, editors, verbatim reporters, and copy preparers/proof-readers/production editors or the LCE held before 2017 in translation.

Job-Specific Qualification

  • Passing the relevant Language Competitive Examination (LCE) in French is required.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of two years of experience in translation is required.
  • Experience in translation within the United Nations is desirable.
  • Experience in translation in a broad range of subjects dealt with by the Economic Commission for Africa (social, economic, financial, administrative, scientific, and technical), with a recognized specialization in a particular substantive, technical or administrative area, is desirable.
  • Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of ECA. For the post advertised, a perfect command of French, which must be the candidate’s main language is required. Excellent knowledge of English and knowledge of another official language of the United Nations, as tested by the United Nations competitive examination for French translators/précis-writers, is required.
