The World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) seeks to hire Research Officer I – a Vegetable Agronomist/Horticulturalist to assist in the implementation of “A Sustainable Agrifood Systems Approach for Sudan (SASAS): Vegetables for Income, Nutrition and Employment in Sudan (VINES)” project. This position will be based at the WorldVeg Ethiopia country office – in Addis Ababa.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical advisory services and team support to the vegetable production and utilization activities of the SASAS-VINES project;
  • Establish Vegetable Business Networks (VBNs) or farmers groups including other vegetable value chain actors;
  • Build capacity of stakeholders on good vegetable production practices (GAP), postharvest management, seed production and consumption;
  • Coordinate vegetable production activities, ensuring that they are implemented according to protocols with the highest standards of crop management;
  • Overseas distribution of seed kits with quality vegetable seeds to VBN groups, champion farmers, and community schools;
  • Carries out a participatory on-farm demonstration of vegetable production and post-harvest technologies
  • Provide technical support for sustainable market access through vegetable market platforms (innovation platform);
  • Contribute to the documentation of the project’s achievements in terms of reports, publications, brochures and or guidelines;
  • Creates partnerships and synergies with the private seed sector to improve the availability, accessibility, affordability, and quality of vegetable seed supplies to vegetable producers;
  • Facilitates partner meetings and learning events;
  • Performs any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Agriculture, Natural Resource Management, or Horticultural Sciences

Experience:

  • Minimum Three years experience in an international non-governmental organization (NGO) or company

Skills:

  • Proven experience in training field workers and farmers of different ages and gender
  • Proven experience in establishing farmers' groups or cooperatives
  • Thorough knowledge of vegetable agronomy, postharvest, and IPM
  • Affinity with Youth and women empowerment approaches, and planetary health
  • Excellent computer skills in MS‐office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Team player with excellent communication skills in spoken and written English
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact with partners and colleagues in a multi-cultural setting.

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position level: HG 13

Minimum Base salary: Birr 37,575 per month (Negotiable depending on the salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
