Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Main purpose of job: To provide transport services for staff and visitors of the British Embassy Addis Ababa to and from assigned destinations within Ethiopia in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner, observing all road traffic rules as well as internal post security regulations.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Safely drive HMG vehicles for FCDO staff and visitors/guests on official business, planning and following efficient routes to ensure timely arrivals.
  • Perform daily inspections to ensure that all official vehicles are well-maintained, roadworthy, and in good working order.
  • Complete vehicle inspection checklists and promptly report any defects, faults, or incidents to the Transport Manager.
  • Ensure that all passengers use seat belts.
  • Drive the vehicle in a safe and lawful manner at all times, ensuring compliance with local traffic laws and embassy security protocols.
  • Conduct airport runs to pick up/drop off HMG staff and visitors.
  • Liaise with airport officials as necessary.
  • Provide basic administrative support when needed, such as document and letter delivery to the right place at the specified time.
  • Collect mail from the post office and newspapers.
  • Check that all vehicle equipment and tools are secured safely and functioning correctly.
  • Notify and alert the Deputy Transport Manager for vehicle servicing after every 5000KM run.
  • Ensure the vehicle is serviced, clean, and in good condition before traveling on country trips.
  • Ensure vehicles are used only in accordance with FCDO transport policy, keeping complete and accurate journey record sheets/travel logs and fuel usage records for all journeys in official vehicles.
  • Wear an official uniform and act professionally, maintaining confidentiality and discretion at all times.
  • Perform other tasks as directed by the Transport Manager/Deputy Transport Manager.

Essential Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Valid and clean Grade-3 or equivalent driving license
  • Minimum of 3 years verifiable previous driving experience
  • Good knowledge of local traffic laws, roads, and routes
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Flexibility to work outside regular hours when needed
  • Basic computer skills - Microsoft Office Tools & email communication

Desirable Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Previous experience driving for an embassy, INGOs, or corporate setting
  • Defensive driving certification
  • Basic vehicle maintenance skills
  • Proficiency in radio communication for coordination and security purposes
  • Customer service experience
