The Consortium of Ethiopian Human Rights Organizations (CEHRO) is a consortium of 32 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) working on Human Rights, Democracy, and Sustainable Peace in Ethiopia. Over the past seven (7) years, CEHRO has been actively engaged in the advancement of human rights protection and promotion, democratic and sustainable peace values in Ethiopia by creating a common platform for human rights CSOs to articulate their voices and launch well-articulated and evidence-based advocacy for an enabling environment for the operation of civil society in Ethiopia. In Ethiopia, grassroots CSOs often encounter difficulties in utilizing media for their advocacy and outreach efforts effectively. These limitations stem from several factors, including insufficient organizational capacity, which often hampers their ability to engage in comprehensive media relations and advocacy.
Additionally, a pervasive mistrust of mainstream media has further inhibited their engagement, as many grassroots CSOs fear that their messages may be misrepresented and misinterpreted.
Furthermore, the lack of strong partnerships and collaborative efforts with media outlets constrains their visibility and the impact of their communication and advocacy efforts. Ultimately, these obstacles contribute to a low presence in public discourse, restricting local and grassroots CSOs’ ability to voice community concerns and influence policy change in their constituency. In response to these challenges, CEHRO is gearing up to launch a project designed to connect local and grassroots CSOs operating in Amhara, Oromia, Afar, and Benishangul Gumuz regions with the media.
