Summary of position

The Nutrition and WASH SBC Officer under the direct supervision of Zonal Nutrition and Health Supervisor will spearhead the implementation of high quality Nutrition and WASH SBC activities that are appropriate to project beneficiaries, stakeholders and communities. He/she will implement and support additional high impact child survival and development programs such as psychosocial support and SBC. S will participate/he will participate in the designing and implementation of IYCF, hygiene promotion and SBC capacity building activities targeting frontline health workers (Counselors, registers, cooking demonstration assistants and referrals), HEWs, Mother-to-Mother Support Groups (MtMSGs) leaders, Father-to-Father Support Groups (FtFSG) leaders at health facility and community levels. He/she is expected to establish and maintain productive working relationships with line managers, project staff, local government, partners and beneficiaries. Moreover, participation in facility and community-based Nutrition (IYCF) program monitoring, supportive supervision and survey activities.

Purpose: To provide support on Nutrition and WASH promotion, psychosocial Support, GMP, hygiene promotion and community mobilization services for target beneficiaries at facility and community level and analyze the implementation of activities to improve service delivery quality in the catchment areas supported by Action Against Hunger.

Engagement: Collaborates with community health worker, community leaders, supervisors, and partners (HEWs to amplify our work in tackling malnutrition as well as building synergies with other sectors to promote a multisectoral approach to address underlying causes of undernutrition.

Delivery: Provide day-to-day technical support and direct delivery in AAH supported health facilities and catchment community, Promote, support and protect IYCF practices target beneficiaries and proper follow up has been done regularly until age of children above target and produce report and support the coordination, home visit. Provide technical supervision and support for MtMSG/FtFSG organized at community level

Essential roles:

1.Program Implementation and Technical Oversight for IYCF/MIYCN and WASH interventions

  • Oversee the day-to-day implementation of MIYCN/Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E) activities within the assigned woreda/kebele.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to staff at nutrition service sites and community levels, ensuring effective application of national MIYCN/IYCF protocols.
  • Screen infants under six months and lactating mothers for malnutrition and IYCF practices; enroll eligible cases in the C-MAMI (Community-based Management of At-risk Mothers and Infants) program( Screening)
  • Admit all children under two into the Growth Monitoring and Promotion (GMP) program and ensure monthly follow-up( Admission)
  • Provide IYCF counselling to mothers/caregivers and support breastfeeding, including re-lactation when needed( Counseling)
  • Develop and disseminate locally appropriate IYCF messages and materials; conduct health education sessions at both facility and community levels(SBC)

2. Community Engagement and Capacity Building

  • Strengthen Health Extension Workers and Women's Development Army to promote hygiene, sanitation, and AMIYCN services at the household level.
  • Collaborate with community volunteers to establish and support Mother-to-Mother Support Groups (MTMSGs).
  • Facilitate village-level dialogues on hygiene, sanitation, and nutrition using the Social Analysis and Action (SAA) approach.
  • Integrate IYCF/MICN activities into community-based sensitization efforts, including nutrition awareness campaigns.
  • Identify training needs for health workers and support IYCF training, mentoring, and follow-ups at health facilities and nutrition sites.

3. Planning, Monitoring, and Reporting

  • Prepare field visit plans, supervision checklists, and submit monthly reports tracking progress, challenges, and lessons learned( Planning and Reporting)
  • Assist in stock management for mother-baby areas and support IYCF M&E planning, implementation, and coordination( Resource Management and Monitoring)
  • Link nutrition and WASH activities with sectors like economic development, health, and natural resource management for a holistic approach( Integration Across Sectors)
  • Apply behavior change strategies to address barriers to WASH and nutrition behaviors and contribute to IYCF assessments, surveys, and identifying vulnerable groups( Behavior Change and Support)
  • Ensure proper documentation of IYCF/MIYCN activities, compile reports, and work closely with colleagues to address challenges and ensure effective program implementation( Collaboration and Documentation)

4. Incorporate MIYCN/IYCF in ENA and Ensure Cross-sectoral Integration and Sustainability

  • Ensure WASH infrastructure and activities align with ACF, donor, and government guidelines and policies.
  • Link nutrition, WASH, and other sectors to foster collaboration and improve health outcomes through integrated approaches.
  • Promote and integrate nutrition-sensitive WASH practices to drive sustainable behavior change at the community level.
  • Support the design, planning, implementation, and monitoring of IYCF/MICN activities in refugee camps and host communities.
  • Ensure proper management and distribution of IYCF supplies, maintain a stock management system, and promote compliance with national IYCF/MIYCN guidelines and the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately, within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with many interruptions. Must be able to proofread own work accurately so that only minor corrections are needed on an infrequent basis.

Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

  • The duties of the job require regular job attendance of at least five days per week. Must be available to work outside normal office hours or at the weekends as required.
  • Must be able to travel as required for standard domestic and international business purposes. While performing the duties of this job in the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well as to infectious diseases.

Required Qualifications and Professional Experience

  • Diploma/bachelor’s degree in health officer, nursing, public health, human nutrition or related fields of study from recognized university/college.
  • At least two/three years of practical and proven experience in CMAM and IYCF program implementation.
  • Experience working in humanitarian relief and development health and nutrition program.
  • Exposure and participation in national and sub-national Nutrition (IYCF) coordination platforms and TWGs.
  • Having a better understanding of national and global nutrition dynamics, humanitarian principles and standards.
  • Previous experience working for an international NGO is preferable.
  • Language skills: English- professional written and spoken, local language for the base (Oromiffa)

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong communication, networking and representation skill; good strategic and analytical abilities;
  • Embracing Diversity, Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation, good experience in capacity building;
  • Demonstrable ability at report writing and excellent communication skill, proficient in use of MS office and email applications, capable of working in team.
  • Fluent in English and Amharic both in written and spoken.
  • Skill in local language is desirable.
