The Assistant Mushroom Grower works under the direction of the Mushroom Grower in the Growing Department and is concerned with checking the harvest room’s daily and ensuring that the rooms are watered, cleaned, and disease free. The Assistant Mushroom Grower also supervises and coordinates the loading and unloading process and supervises all men work employees. The farm operates 365 days a year, so the Assistant Grower is required to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Job description:
1.1 Plant, fertilize, cultivate, spray, irrigate and harvest mushroom crops by:
- Ensuring substrate preparation and cultivation for all types of mushrooms growing
- Assist in monitoring all aspects of crop performance to achieve KPI's
1.2 Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment by:
- Checking loading equipment set up and ensure it is set up correctly/safely and in line with Company policies and procedures
- Monitoring safe operating condition of harvesting equipment and reports unsafe or inadequate equipment to the maintenance department and, if necessary, removes it from service
1.3 Follow Health, food safety and security procedures by:
- Ensuring all Food Safety and Quality concerns are immediately addressed with the Harvesting
- Supervisor(s)
- Washing and sanitizing the halls and picking room floors as needed or directed
- Adhering to health, safety, and hygiene standards in accordance with Company rules and regulations
- Monitoring and assuring the proper use of aprons, hairnets, knives, tags, gloves, and personal protective equipment
1.4 Detect disease and health problems in mushroom crops by:
- Assist Growers in disease management; prevention and control of disease through communication, monitoring and SOP's (Standard Operation Procedures)
- Ensuring mushroom substrate is cleaned up and does not run off, leach or contaminate ground water or other water sources
1.5 Set and monitor water lines, air flow, humidity and temperature in mushroom barns by:
- Ensuring environment controlling, including temperature control, relative humidity, light and acidity of mushroom growing process
- Distributing water onto the mushroom growing beds as needed
- Checking all growing rooms on all the farms for accurate temperatures, working control systems, other directed needs
1.6 Maintain or assist in the maintenance of facilities and farm infrastructure including cleaning mushroom barns, and work areas:
- Checking all steam boilers and mushroom house boilers to ensure the machinery is working properly
- Ensuring the set up and removal of fly traps as needed, along with other general maintenance tasks as required for the operation of mushroom growing
- Ensuring regular disposing of junk and industrial waste in the correct way

- Ability to read text, numeracy, problem solving, time management and customer relations skill
- Focus on quality including the development and adherence to Quality Policy and standard operating procedures that create farm efficiencies
- Maintains updated knowledge and strong technical expertise of HACCP, SQF, GMP, WHMIS, First Aid, regulations and practices with Health and Safety standards
- Ability to work constantly and lift and/or move 50lbs/23kgs credentials
- Ability to manage and build a team
- Flexible and controlled under crisis situations
Physical Demands:
