Environment And Social Specialist

About the Role

Roha is seeking an Environment and Social (E&S) Specialist to support the successful development of the Roha Medical Campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This role will be responsible for the development and implementation of Roha’s environment and social strategy and action plan.

Responsibilities include:

• Lead the company’s E&S strategic initiatives and their successful execution.
• Develop, monitor, and evaluate to the highest standards the strategy and implementation of E&S projects (i.e., net-zero carbon facility, environmental rehabilitation, livelihood improvement, community development, stakeholder engagement, internship program, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), etc.).
• Oversee RMC’s Forest growth, maintenance activities, and landscape works; provide technical support as necessary.
• Manage employees, consultants, and workers hired or engaged for E&S initiatives.
• Lead the implementation and updating of the Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS).
• Conduct Roha’s E&S audit and risk assessment and lead the mitigation measures.
• Oversee the environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) policy Implementation.
• Develop CSR policies and initiatives; monitor and evaluate their implementation.
• Serve as the head of Roha Health Foundation (RHF), RMC’s CSR wing, and lead RHF activities.
• Lead E&S trainings to the internal team, relevant personnel, and affiliate institutions.
• Lead stakeholder engagement and communication on E&S initiatives.
• Maintain good relations with RMC’s surrounding community, woreda and sub-city leads, and project affected people (PAPs); provide timely solutions to address community concerns.
• Manage and coordinate relationships with multiple stakeholders, both internally and externally, including E&S consultants and relevant government entities at different levels, and lead E&S-related decision-making.
• Prepare and track the budget related to E&S initiatives.
• Prepare regular reports to management and other stakeholders.
• Take on other tasks and responsibilities as needed to ensure the overall company and all projects are on track for success from an E&S perspective.

Location: This role is based in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa.

Timing: July 2025

Remuneration: Salary is competitive and will depend on the applicant’s background and experience.

About the Candidate

Successful applicants have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, strong and effective leadership skills, organizational skills with ability to track goal achievements, ability to manage a budget, are flexible and imaginative, are high-energy, persistent, self-starters, are good communicators in writing and verbally, and have a proven track record of delivering on complex projects in challenging environments. Applicants could demonstrate this by having:

• BSc degree in Social and Environmental Science or related field, master’s degree preferred.
• At least 5 years of work experience in a role that combines project implementation and development in the areas of environment protection, community engagement, and corporate social responsibility.
• Consistent track record of developing and implementing environmental protection projects.
• Knowledge of ESG reporting mechanisms.
• Knowledge of the latest Environmental and Social safeguards and concepts.
• Ability to switch between different tasks and deliver quality work in a fast-paced environment.
• Knowledge of Ethiopian and international environment-related policies.
• Experience organizing training and consultative meetings.
• Experience in stakeholder management.
• Experience working with communities from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
• Proficiency in both Amharic and English is required.
• Experience in designing and constructing green and/or zero-carbon buildings is a plus.
• International Finance Corporation (IFC) EDGE training and certification is a plus.
