Responsibilities

Role purpose:

To effectively manage and coordinate all maintenance activities within Safaricom’s facilities, ensuring the safety, reliability, and optimal performance of building systems, infrastructure, and equipment. The role involves planning and executing preventive and corrective maintenance, overseeing vendor and contractor services, ensuring adherence to safety and company standards, managing service contracts and performance, collaborating with stakeholders, and supporting budgeting and reporting to maintain a functional and efficient work environment.

Key accountabilities and decision ownership:

Soft facilities Services

  • Ensure all company equipment and facilities are regularly inspected, maintained, and fully operational to provide a safe and productive environment for all users.
  • Lead and coordinate maintenance, renovation, and repair projects, ensuring delivery within agreed specifications, timelines, and budgets while minimizing disruption to business operations.
  • Develop and manage annual maintenance, renovation, and restoration budgets, closely monitor expenditures to maintain financial discipline and align with company policies.
  • Ensure all installations comply with corporate standards, local regulations, security protocols, and health, safety, and wellbeing (HSW) requirements, proactively identifying and mitigating risks.
  • Oversee contractors and service providers, enforcing compliance with contractual terms, quality standards, safety regulations, and agreed schedules to guarantee high-quality outcomes.
  • Provide expert technical advice and innovative solutions to address facility maintenance challenges and improve operational efficiency.
  • Maintain and regularly update emergency preparedness and evacuation plans to ensure readiness and safety of all occupants.
  • Ensure consistent and reliable delivery of core building services such as stable power, HVAC systems, water supply, and other essential amenities to support business continuity.
  • Implement and manage strategic office space planning to optimize utilization, accommodate business growth, and enhance employee experience.
  • Maintain accurate inventory and condition records of all property and facility assets to support effective asset management and lifecycle planning.
  • Oversee fuel procurement, distribution, and management for facility operations, ensuring cost-effectiveness and availability.
  • Build and maintain strong vendor relationships, managing performance and contract compliance to maximize service quality and value.
  • Drive continuous improvement in facilities maintenance practices, coordinating repair activities
  • promptly to minimize downtime and extend asset lifespan.

Budgets and reports

  • Develop and manage budgets and forecast for all internal services related issues.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly and annual reports Core competencies, knowledge and experience:

  • Takes initiative to solve problems creatively and improve maintenance processes for better efficiency and reliability.
  • Manages day-to-day facility operations, balancing urgent repairs with planned maintenance and long-term facility care.
  • Acts responsibly and takes ownership of assigned tasks, ensuring high-quality work and timely completion.
  • Adapts to changing work conditions and priorities while maintaining focus on safety and service quality.
  • Plans and schedules include maintenance work, coordinating resources and contractors to avoid disruptions.
  • Monitors progress of maintenance projects, identifying risks early and taking corrective actions when needed.
  • Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and compliance checks.

Qualifications

Must have technical / professional qualifications:

  • Degree or National Diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or Electronic Engineering or another related field
  • Have over 5 years’ post-graduation work experience in an engineering function with competency in Electrical, Mechanical, woodwork and civil work systems
  • Fully proficient in MS office and Project Management software applications
  • Defines project scope and deliverables in terms of time, cost, quality and business benefit
  • Schedules activity and identifies resource needs, dependencies and synergies evaluate progress, mitigates risks and addresses issues
  • Have the proven ability to work and deliver under pressure, pay attention to detail and follow up on issues until they are resolved.
  • Fully conversant with Health, safety, Environment and Quality policies and requirements.
  • Applies Health & Safety policy, structures and systems to ensure the business delivers a safe working environment,
  • Excellent communication skills, high level of integrity and honesty
  • Pro-actively adapts own style and approach to build rapport, and work with others more effectively
  • Thinks about processes and problems cross-functionally and end-to-end
  • Acts in line with legal, regulatory, professional, compliance and ethical standards

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must have assumed current Safaricom role for a minimum of 12 months period.
  • Employees are strongly advised to discuss their career aspirations with their line managers when they apply for vacant jobs.
