Background
To assist in the operation and maintenance of Mechanical Maintenance system technicians in performing routine planned and preventive maintenance (PPM) as stated in the duties and responsibilities section.
Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships
The post is located in the Facilities Management Section at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Under the direct supervision of the Mechanical Engineering Technician in the Operations Unit, the Mechanical Maintenance Technician will be responsible for the following functions:
Duties and Responsibilities
- Operation and Maintenance of Mechanical Works:
- Supervise the performance of the Electro-Mechanical contractor and follow up on daily practical implementation of the mechanical maintenance schedule at UNECA compound and Executive Secretary House.
- Coordinate and participate in all day-to-day mechanical activities performed by the Electro-Mechanical contractor in accordance with the mechanical maintenance schedule.
- Revise and update the maintenance manual, to-do list, and history card of the mechanical installation.
- Ensure the functionality and good state of all mechanical installations in the compound, such as HVAC systems, sanitary installations, fire fighting systems, kitchen equipment, etc.
- Regularly check and correct all safety controls, like safety valves, pressure switches, level indicators, and temperature sensors.
- Supervise and ensure the cleanliness and good state of the Mechanical Equipment, Workshops, and all mechanical rooms in the compound.
- Maintain good working relations with the water authority to achieve uninterrupted water supply to the compound.
- Collect water bills and settle payments monthly in a timely manner, ensuring to collect and settle the bills for water meters located at Executive Secretary House and UNECA compound.
- Assist in teamwork with other trades.
- Preparation of Spare Part List and Store Management:
- Prepare an annual spare parts list of mechanical items needed and monitor their availability in the store.
- Control daily issues of spare parts and consumable items for operation and maintenance works from the central store or satellite store as required.
- Coordinate the annual inventory of mechanical equipment with the inventory unit.
- Prepare an annual consumption list of consumable items used by the contractor.
- Collaborate with the UMOJA team to update the Real Estate Management System.
- Workshop Management and Safety:
- Supervise and ensure a good state of all tools and machinery in the workshop.
- Analyze performance and identify faults in the equipment (if any).
- Ensure implementation of proper safety procedures and proper utilization of all safety gear, tools, and machinery in the workshop and workplace.
- Prepare daily operation and maintenance reports using relevant software like AutoCAD, MS Office, MS Project, etc.
- Be conversant in using emails, fax, and telephone for day-to-day reports and charts, assisting the supervisor in the preparation of technical specifications and BOQ using available resources in the office and workshop.
- Work Plan:
- The work varies from preparing draft BOQ, planning minor project activities, complex installation works, and various maintenance works during normal working hours per week.
- Overtime work, evening, weekend, holiday shifts, and emergency calls may be required at any time.
Qualifications/Special Skills
High school completion is required. Mechanical engineering skills are required. Four years of progressive experience directly related to operating and maintaining electro-mechanical installations. Work experience in the United Nations system is an asset.
Languages
Fluency in the English language is required.
