Job Summary:
The Senior Finance Officer is responsible for overseeing financial management, budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, and compliance activities to ensure efficient and transparent use of organizational resources. The role supports strategic financial planning, supervises finance staff, manages donor-funded projects, and ensures compliance with organizational policies, donor requirements, and applicable financial regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare, monitor, and manage organizational and project budgets.
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and bank reconciliations.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Ensure compliance with donor regulations, organizational financial policies, and statutory requirements.
- Monitor project expenditures and provide timely budget variance analysis.
- Support financial planning, forecasting, and budget development for organizational programs.
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate internal and external audits and facilitate timely resolution of audit findings.
- Supervise, mentor, and provide technical guidance to finance staff.
- Ensure proper financial controls, risk management, and accountability systems are implemented.
- Support grant management and donor financial reporting requirements.
- Prepare financial analyses and recommendations to support management decision-making.
- Perform other finance and administrative duties assigned by management.
Educational Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Commerce, Finance, or a related field.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in finance or accounting within the development sector.
- At least 5 years of experience in a senior finance or supervisory role within humanitarian or development programs.
- Proven experience in budget development, financial management, and staff supervision.
- Previous experience in NGO or INGO financial operations is required.
- Experience managing UNICEF grants is an added advantage.
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of financial management, budgeting, and accounting principles.
- Excellent negotiation, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment when handling sensitive financial information.
- Strong organizational, documentation, and report writing skills.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and financial compliance.
- Ability to learn and effectively use accounting software such as QuickBooks.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
