Job Summary:
The Specimen Management Technician is responsible for receiving, verifying, labeling, processing, storing, and transporting laboratory specimens while ensuring specimen integrity and compliance with laboratory standards. The role supports accurate laboratory testing by maintaining proper specimen handling procedures, documentation, and quality control practices while adhering to safety and confidentiality requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive, verify, label, and register laboratory specimens according to established procedures.
- Ensure proper collection, handling, processing, storage, and transportation of specimens to maintain sample integrity.
- Inspect specimens for accuracy, completeness, and suitability for laboratory testing.
- Maintain accurate specimen records and update laboratory information systems as required.
- Coordinate specimen distribution to appropriate laboratory sections for testing.
- Monitor specimen storage conditions and ensure compliance with laboratory quality standards.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the specimen reception and storage areas.
- Adhere to laboratory safety procedures, infection prevention protocols, and waste disposal guidelines.
- Protect patient confidentiality and ensure compliance with ethical and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in quality assurance activities and participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Prepare reports and maintain documentation related to specimen management activities.
- Perform other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Educational Qualifications:
- BSc Degree or Diploma in Laboratory Technology or a related field.
Work Experience:
- BSc Degree: Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Diploma: Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in specimen management, laboratory operations, or a similar role.
Required Skills and Competencies:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Fluency in both written and spoken Amharic and English.
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to quality patient care.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Demonstrates punctuality, reliability, and professionalism.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and infection prevention procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to ethical standards at all times.
