Job Description: Project Assistant - Livelihood
Responsible to: Project Coordinator
Responsible for: National Volunteer
Location: Ethiopia, Bambasi, Tsore and Sherkole Refugee Camp.
Role Purpose: The Livelihood Project Assistant will be responsible for the implementation of Building Skills for Market-Based Livelihoods for Youth in Assosa with a special focus and roles on youth facilitation, youth mobilization, beneficiary selections for different Skill training, and livelihood interventions including training and community conversations, business model, gender transformation and social inclusion.
The project assistant will facilitate meaningful participation of women, girls, people with disabilities and the youth at every step of the project planning, implementation, community conversations, peer to peer discussions, organize, support, and strengthen camp based SHGs, and monitor their progress which will be implemented in Sherkole, Bambasi, Gureshembola, and Tsore, refugee camps and host community youths of Benishangul Gumuz region.
Responsibilities?
Key responsibilities:
- Coordinate Refugee and host community project activities according to strategy, proposals, budgets and plans,
- Ensure adherence to VSO policies and donor requirements,
- Involve and inform communities and community leaders about the activities
- Change the annual operational plans into weekly, monthly and quarterly implementation plans
- Coordinate with camp-level monitoring agencies (ARRA and UNHCR) and relevant partners
- Assess the local market and determine potential employment opportunities suitable for refugee and host community youth.
- Create awareness and Inform target youth about local market needs, employability skills, goods and services in refugee nearby areas and Asossa.
- Update local market context periodically to reach out the most viable livelihood sectors for youth.
- Ensure timely procurement, and distribution of materials and equipment according to VSO procurement policies and procedures
- Involve in selecting primary actors (BSMLY project beneficiaries) and ensure that most appropriate are targeted as per criteria and procedures set by the project
- Supervise, coach, and monitor the progress of Refugee Volunteers (RV)
- Prepare periodic progress reports and other documents as required
- Investigate and facilitate the introduction of new technology, methods and approaches in order to improve the quality of the education activities
- Organize planned events to share skills and increase awareness of youth on livelihood opportunities.
- Provide individual and group mentoring for youth to help them identify feasible livelihood pathways and employment opportunities.
- Promote youth voluntarism as a pathway for skills building and employment.
- Identify the skill of youth and initiate engaging the public and private sectors to create internship and apprenticeship opportunities for youth.
- Participate and closely work with private and public training centers to ensure high-standard skills are transferred to the primary actor.
- Under the guidance of the PC the position holder is expected to work closely and consistently with NRC camp-based staff, RV, and NV (National Volunteer)
- Provide Training and undertake continuous follow for organized self-help group
- Participate and facilitate continuous discussion forums and platforms to monitor the employment status of youth and sustain similar services among other youth in the target areas.
- Identify gaps and Link youth and SHGs among financial institutions and private sectors to help them access financial services in long term.
- Continuously maintain the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of the project.
- Promote the potential and value of refugee youth among employers and the local market.
- Ensure that project activity implementation should consider social inclusion, Gender, and social accountability issues.
- Prepare and develop periodic and progress reports as per schedule and donor and monitoring requirements.
- Ensure proper filing of documents according to VSO policy
- Represent VSO and Participate camp coordination thematic meetings and other activities
- Work closely with RRS, UNHCR, NRC and RCC or community representatives ensuring transparency and accountability.
Working With Volunteers
- Provide professional support to volunteers to identify and promote clear linkages between their work and higher-level objectives of the program plan and country priority.
- Support and empower volunteers to participate in project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- University Degree in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Business Administration, Project Management/EDPM, Social Work, Policy Analysis or other related social science field.
- 2 - 5 years related work experience in project implementation, community mobilization, advocacy and awareness-raising activities of which at least 1 year should be in NGO or NGO-funded projects.
- Good understanding of small-scale business, SHG, Vocational skill training, and youth mobilization work
- Prior experience as an entrepreneur running a self/group business or any business.
- Satisfactory knowledge of the local context of the project implementation area, i.e. Benishangul Gumuz, Assosa and familiarity with social, economic, political and other determinants of young people in the region particularly in Assosa city.
- Knowledge of local languages of the target area including Arabic,
- Knowledge of local context and specific issues of youth livelihoods. Fully aware of the refugee, youth and host community livelihood patterns.
- Ability to write and speak in English
- Computer skills (Windows, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Internet).
- Sensitivity to cultural differences and ability to interact with people at all levels of the organization.
