Job Description
we are seeking a highly organized and proactive Import Operations Officer. This role is pivotal in ensuring the smooth, compliant, and timely movement of imported goods through Ethiopian customs and into the client’s operational pipeline.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage end-to-end import operations—from shipment dispatch to final delivery—including documentation, customs clearance, and inland transportation.
- Prepare, verify, and submit all import documentation (commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, certificates of origin, import permits, etc.) in compliance with Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority (ERCA) requirements.
- Serve as the primary liaison between suppliers, shipping lines, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and internal stakeholders (procurement, warehouse, finance).
- Monitor shipment tracking and proactively resolve delays, discrepancies, or regulatory issues.
- Ensure full compliance with Ethiopian import laws, trade policies, and international trade terms (Incoterms).
- Track and reconcile import-related costs, including duties, taxes, storage, and demurrage fees.
- Maintain accurate digital and physical records of all import transactions and support internal/external audits.
- Stay current on changes in customs procedures, tariff codes, and regulatory updates affecting imports.
- Generate regular reports on shipment status, clearance timelines, and cost performance.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in logistics, Supply Chain or related fields.
- Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience in foreign procurement, preferably in commercial or trading companies with import/export services
- Strong understanding of International Trade Laws, Customs Regulations, INCOTERMS, and Import Documentation Requirement.
- Familiarity with HS codes, tariffs, duties, and exemption procedures.
- Proficiency in Documentation Management.
- Experience using customs portals, ERP systems and freight forwarding platforms.
- Analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
- Organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
