ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
The United Nations – World Food Programme (WFP) Ethiopian Medical Assistant Team (EMAT) Clinic operates as a primary healthcare facility dedicated to providing medical services to United Nations personnel, encompassing staff members, consultants, UN volunteers, and eligible dependents. Across its network of six clinics, situated both in Addis Ababa and field locations, the EMAT Clinic delivers emergency and primary healthcare services, as well as administering vaccinations to eligible staff and their family members. Within this framework, the Paramedic Nurse fulfills a critical role in the provision of first-line medical care, the support of clinic operations, and the effective response to medical emergencies.
JOB PURPOSE: To provide high-quality, timely, and compassionate emergency and primary healthcare services, the Paramedic Nurse plays a critical role in assessing, stabilizing, and treating patients in both routine and life-threatening situations. Combining clinical nursing expertise with pre- hospital emergency care skills, the Paramedic Nurse ensures effective patient care across diverse environments, including clinics, field operations, and mobile response settings. The role supports the continuity of care, health promotion, and disaster response efforts, contributing to the overall safety, well-being, and resilience of the UN WFP employees and dependents served.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive):
Under the direct supervision of the clinic physician or designated supervisor, the paramedic nurse will:
- Provide basic and advanced life support services within the scope of practice.
- Assist physicians in examination, treatment, and medical procedures.
- Administer medications and injections as prescribed.
- Provide emergency care including triage, wound management, and stabilization of patients.
- Monitor vital signs and medical conditions of patients.
- Maintain accurate and confidential patient records.
- Manage and ensure readiness of emergency and first-aid equipment.
- Coordinate medical evacuations and ambulance services as needed.
- Participate in health education, hygiene promotion, and wellness programs.
- Ensure proper infection prevention and control (ipc) measures are followed.
- Support vaccination campaigns and public health surveillance activities.
- Assist in the ordering, storage, and management of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
- Respond to medical emergencies during field missions, if required.
- Participate in clinic administrative and logistical support as directed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
STANDARD MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Secondary school certificate. A diploma or bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Paramedical Sciences, or equivalent. Certification as a Paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is an added advantage.
Valid license/registration to practice nursing or paramedicine in the home country.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum 4 years of progressively responsible clinical experience. Experience in emergency or pre-hospital care is highly desirable. Prior experience in international, humanitarian or UN settings is an asset.
