Reporting to EHOD – M-PESA Products, the Product Designer – M-PESA will help create intuitive, user-centered experiences across M-PESA’s digital channels, including SuperApp, Mini Apps, USSD, and Web.
The role focuses on experience design, execution, collaboration, and learning, contributing to wireframes, prototypes, and UI designs that drive fintech innovation and enhance user experience.
Working closely with product squads, the designer will guide strategic design decisions on user experience to improve usability and adoption, ensuring alignment with product and business goals.

The role focuses on experience design, execution, collaboration, and learning, contributing to wireframes, prototypes, and UI designs that drive fintech innovation and enhance user experience.
Working closely with product squads, the designer will guide strategic design decisions on user experience to improve usability and adoption, ensuring alignment with product and business goals.
Key accountabilities and decision ownership:
- Product Design Delivery: Own end-to-end design process including user research, wireframes, prototypes, high-fidelity UI, and design system contributions.
- Collaboration in Squads: Work closely with product managers, engineers, and researchers to support design delivery and learn cross-functional workflows.
- User Research & Testing: Participate in usability testing, help gather customer insights, and apply feedback to improve designs.
- Design Systems Contribution: Maintain and evolve M-PESA design guidelines to ensure consistency across M-PESA digital channels.
- Learning & Growth: Build skills in product design tools and methods, with learning from customer and user feedback.
- Accessibility & Inclusivity: Ensure designs remain usable and inclusive for diverse consumer segments across devices.

Core Competencies, Knowledge and Experience
Business Competencies
- 2+ years of experience in product design, UI/UX, or interaction design, preferably within fintech, digital payments and mobile applications.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating user-centered design, digital product launches, and measurable impact.
- Experience designing for diverse user bases, including emerging market consumers.
- Creativity and Innovation
- Ability to turn customer or business needs into simple, usable design solutions.
- Curiosity to explore new design trends and apply them in practical ways.
Business Know-how
- Familiarity with mobile money, digital payments, or consumer fintech landscape.
- Understanding of user research methods and ability to translate insights into product improvements.
- Past App Design experience on design
- Appreciation of how design decisions impact user behavior and business outcomes.
Working with Change
- Comfortable working in Agile or iterative development environments.
- Open to feedback and able to adapt quickly.
Functional Competencies
- Proficiency with modern design tools (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or equivalent).
- Strong skills in wireframing, prototyping, and interaction design.
- Knowledge of mobile-first and responsive design principles.
- Experience working with and contributing to design systems.
- Strong communication skills to present design concepts to stakeholders and cross-functional teams
Financial Responsibility:
Responsible for expending OPEX within approved limits for product design specific activity
Qualifications
Must have technical / professional qualifications:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business, technology, Product Design or related fields like Interaction Design,
- Demonstration of your past design works
Desired
- Fintech background experience highly desirable especially product design
- UX/UI design certifications.
- Proficiency with modern design tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe, InVision etc
