Position: Driver/Liaison Assistant

Job Summary: The Driver/Liaison Assistant in Addis Ababa will contribute to the calling of Medical Teams International by ensuring the safe transportation of authorized goods and passengers. The role involves supporting staff through day-to-day services, maintaining vehicle safety and technical conditions, adhering to Ethiopia’s traffic regulations, and carrying out liaison activities whenever requested by the office.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operate vehicles according to Medical Teams’ fleet management policies and Ethiopia road regulations to ensure the safety and security of passengers, staff, volunteers, and guests.
• Support the nurse in administering first aid and additional interventions during emergencies.
• Identify maintenance needs and immediately report any vehicle issues to the supervisor before transporting passengers.
• Transport vehicles to approved vendor facilities for maintenance and repair services such as oil changes and washing.
• Record all vehicle movements in the logbook and submit weekly inspection reports.
• Ensure vehicles always have sufficient fuel and are maintained in clean condition.
• Ensure passengers use appropriate safety restraints while the vehicle is in motion.
• Ensure proper loading and unloading of goods and verify delivery status against required documents.
• Submit completed delivery documents to the Operations department.
• Ensure all passengers possess the necessary travel documentation before departure.
• Maintain vehicle emergency kits and first aid supplies and report shortages.
• Follow Medical Teams’ emergency procedures and complete written accident reports when necessary.
• Assist with documentation and perform liaison-related duties as assigned.
• Ensure all required vehicle and driver documents are updated and available in the vehicle.
• Participate in safety and defensive driving training sessions.
• Map out driving routes in advance to determine the most efficient travel path.
• Pick up clients according to scheduled time and location.
• Collect payments and issue receipts when required.
• Represent Medical Teams in government offices and support the Country Office across departments.
• Assist passengers with loading and unloading luggage.
• Monitor traffic and weather reports to stay updated on road conditions.
• Ensure vehicle seats are clean, safe, and comfortable for passengers.
• Schedule regular vehicle servicing and report technical issues immediately.
• Arrange vehicle washing and detailing services to maintain cleanliness.
• Handle confidential matters with professionalism and discretion.
• Ensure compliance with traffic laws, speed limits, and area safety requirements.
• Maintain accurate trip log sheets and obtain passenger signatures for all trips.
• Support safeguarding principles by adhering to Medical Teams’ protection and code of conduct policies.
• Perform additional duties assigned by the line manager.

Qualifications:

• Completion of High School Certificate or Grade 10 Certificate under the new curriculum.
• Valid Ethiopian Driving License Grade 1 (Public 1) or Grade 3 Driving License.
• Certification in Defensive Driving from a recognized institution is required.
• Certification in First Aid is required.
• Certification in vehicle mechanics and maintenance is an added advantage.

Experience:

• Minimum of 3 years of heavy vehicle driving experience in Ethiopia.
• Clean driving record is required.
• Experience driving an ambulance and working with an international NGO is an added advantage.

Required Skills and Competencies:

• Strong knowledge of road safety regulations and defensive driving techniques.
• Basic knowledge of vehicle mechanics, maintenance, First Aid, and CPR.
• Excellent defensive driving and emergency response skills.
• Ability to identify and report vehicle maintenance issues.
• Good knowledge of fire extinguisher handling and safety procedures.
• Strong problem-solving, prioritization, and time management skills.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond effectively during emergencies.
• Ability to lift and move materials up to 25KG when required.
• Excellent record-keeping and report writing ability.
• Professionalism, punctuality, and courteous behavior.
• Ability to work independently and under pressure.

Physical Requirements:

• Frequent use of computers, databases, and office equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
• Ability to travel across rough terrain by vehicle or on foot when required.
• Ability to ascend or descend stairs and occasionally perform physical movements such as kneeling, crouching, or lifting.
