Job Summary
The Junior Data Engineer is an essential role on the EthioChicken / Hatch Africa team, supporting the design, development, and maintenance of data pipelines that enable data-driven decision-making across the organization. This role is ideal for a motivated individual with a strong foundation in data concepts, eager to grow their expertise in cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform) and modern data engineering practices.
This role requires a passion for solving data challenges, a willingness to learn, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable data solutions. Experience with ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, cloud data platforms, and relational databases is preferred, with opportunities to develop skills under the mentorship of experienced data professionals.
Role Key Performance Indicators
- Achieve 95%+ uptime and reliability of supported data pipelines.
- Complete 100% of assigned data integration tasks on time with minimal errors.
- Maintain <10% variance in data quality issues identified during pipeline validation.
- Successfully complete at least one data engineering project under senior engineer guidance within the first six months.
- Demonstrate growth in technical skills through active participation in training and mentorship programs within the first year.
Key Responsibilities
Data Pipeline Development & Support
- Assist in designing, building, and optimizing data pipelines and ETL/ELT workflows using Azure and GCP.
- Support the development and maintenance of data lakes, warehouses, and processing systems for structured and unstructured data.
- Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines to ensure performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency.
Data Integration
- Support the integration of data from diverse sources into centralized platforms.
- Assist in maintaining master data standards to ensure consistency and comparability across markets.
- Collaborate with reporting and functional teams to identify opportunities for pipeline automation.
Performance & Documentation
- Monitor data processes for performance and reliability, escalating issues to senior engineers as needed.
- Contribute to documentation of data models, workflows, and processes to support team knowledge sharing.
- Participate in implementing data governance practices, including data quality, lineage, and access management.
Collaboration & Learning
- Work closely with data analysts, data scientists, and business teams to deliver clean, reliable datasets for analytics and reporting.
- Translate basic business needs into technical data solutions under senior engineer guidance.
- Actively engage in mentorship and training to develop technical expertise in data engineering tools and practices.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Experience: 0–2 years in data engineering, data analysis, or a related field (internships or academic projects included).
Technical Skills:
- Basic proficiency in programming languages such as Python or SQL.
- Foundational knowledge of relational databases and SQL.
- Familiarity with data concepts such as ETL/ELT processes, data modeling, or APIs.
- Exposure to cloud platforms is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a willingness to tackle data challenges.
- Collaboration: Good communication and teamwork skills, with a demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Exposure to ETL/ELT tools (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Apache Airflow, Google Cloud Composer).
- Basic understanding of real-time data processing or streaming technologies (e.g., Azure Stream Analytics, Google Cloud Dataflow).
- Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Looker Studio).
- Knowledge of Business Central ERP or APIs (e.g., REST API, Django, FastAPI).
- Interest in DevOps practices (e.g., CI/CD pipelines) or containerization tools (e.g., Docker).
