Job Summary
The Environment and Health Data Scientist will support the development of integrated data systems to inform public health planning and policy related to lead exposure. The role focuses on building data platforms, integrating multi-sectoral datasets, analyzing and visualizing data, and supporting governments and country teams in strengthening data-driven decision-making and policy development.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop tools to identify and inventory global and local health and environmental data systems
- Review and summarize effective integrated data system models for country adaptation
- Collaborate with epidemiologists and teams to develop indicators related to lead exposure risks
- Support integration of health, environmental, social, and demographic datasets from multiple institutions
- Design and maintain analytical datasets, dashboards, and visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, etc.)
- Define database structures and workflows for efficient data integration and storage
- Ensure data quality through validation, cleaning, and consistency checks
- Collaborate with government and non-government stakeholders to align data systems
- Facilitate stakeholder engagement, communication, and technical discussions
- Provide technical guidance and training to country teams on data systems and integration
- Support development of national strategies and action plans for data integration
- Monitor program implementation, reporting progress, and delivering analytical outputs
- Contribute to dissemination of findings through reports, presentations, and publications
Qualifications & Requirements
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, IT, Statistics, Public Health, or related field
- Minimum 6–7 years of experience in data science, data analysis, or health surveillance
- Experience working with large datasets and public or environmental health systems
- Experience working with government institutions and stakeholders
- Proficiency in data tools such as SQL Server, Microsoft Azure, Power BI, Tableau
- Experience with statistical software (R, SAS, SPSS, Stata)
- Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and data visualization skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams
- Professional proficiency in English
Preferred Skills
- Experience with health information systems (e.g., DHIS2)
- Familiarity with geospatial tools (QGIS, ArcGIS)
- Advanced proficiency in R, Python, or SQL
- Experience with AI tools for data analysis
- Experience in toolkit development and capacity building
- Experience working with international organizations and cross-sectoral data
Working Conditions
- Full-time hybrid role based in Addis Ababa (or other eligible locations)
- Requires international travel for meetings and field activities
- Must be able to collaborate across different time zones
