Duties and Responsibilities
This position is located in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Division of Administration, Human Resources Management Section, Organization Development Unit (DOA/HRMS/ODU). The ECA Language School (ELS) is responsible for announcing the registration each term (three trimesters in a year) i.e., September - December, January - April, and April - July. The specific classes in each level will be opened only when it attracts a minimum of five applicants, at least three of whom must be UN staff members. The Kiswahili language teacher will be required to conduct the class/es in person at the classroom assigned by ELS. The duties of the Kiswahili Language Teacher include:
- Teaching Kiswahili language as a foreign language course (all levels, all skills) and specialized high-level communication skills courses.
- Developing and/or teaching face-to-face, blended, and online regular and communication skills courses.
- Updating course curricula, materials, and assessments, and correcting student homework.
- Designing and delivering communication skills courses tailored to the specific needs of United Nations offices.
- Meeting with students to advise and provide individualized feedback.
- Performing other duties as required, including maintaining attendance and grading records.
- Assisting the Coordinator to assess and classify new students according to levels.
- Evaluating training materials at the end of each term.
- Improving the efficiency of the Language Training Programme through active participation.
- Using the Internet and other electronic media to offer up-to-date and high-quality instruction.
Qualifications/Special Skills
- A first degree/BA or equivalent in Kiswahili Language; a relevant master's degree will be an advantage. A minimum of five years teaching Kiswahili Language in a multicultural environment. Eligibility to work in the duty station where this opening is located is required.
