Role and responsibilities

The successful candidate ensures the reliable operation and maintenance of water supply systems serving refugee camps (Bokolomayo, Melkadida, Kob, Halewayine, Buramino) and host communities. Key duties include conducting routine inspections and timely repairs of pipelines, distribution networks, tap stands, and storage tanks; identifying and requesting necessary plumbing materials for procurement; accurately tracking inventory usage; assisting the electromechanical team with pump and generator maintenance; and providing 24/7 on-call emergency response to critical water system failures, coordinating with relevant teams to ensure the continuous supply of safe water.

Specific responsibilities

  • Inspect pressure pipelines, distribution systems, tap stands, and storage tanks across assigned areas (Bokolomayo, Melkadida, Halewayine, Buramino Refugee Camps, and Host Communities). Perform timely repairs on identified leaks and system faults.
  • Ensure adequate backup stock of fittings, valves, and plumbing components for pipelines, distribution systems, tap stands, and storage tanks to minimize system downtime.
  • Assess and document required pipes, fittings, valves, and materials for maintenance and repairs of pipeline networks and tap stands. Submit detailed procurement lists to the WASH Officer (Electromechanical) for timely quarterly purchasing.
  • Serve as the technical focal point for all plumbing, welding, and pipeline installation activities. Manage daily water system operations and leakage maintenance across all points to ensure reliable delivery of safe water to refugees and host communities.
  • Maintain accurate records of spare parts, fittings, and materials consumed during the operation and maintenance of water supply systems.
  • Assist the electromechanical team with plumbing-related tasks during the maintenance of pumps, generators, and associated water supply infrastructure as needed.
  • Prepare and submit weekly performance reports detailing maintenance activities, system status, and resource usage to the WASH Officer (Electromechanical).
  • Maintain 24/7 availability to respond to radio/telephone calls regarding critical water system failures. Immediately relay incident information to the operations team, and electromechanical team for coordinated resolution.

  • External: local authorities, community leaders.
  • Internal: WASH Team Leader, Water Quality/Electromechanical Officers, Support Departments (Logistics, Finance), other CC teams.

Qualifications

Professional competencies:

  • TVET Certification in plumbing.
  • 5+ years’ experience in maintaining water pipelines and fittings
  • Proven field experience in refugee camps, rural water supply, or emergency contexts.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel (fuel/performance tracking) and technical report writing.
  • Basic English.
