UNOPS HAMCO is recruiting for the position of Truck Driver and Crane Operator (Senior Driver), based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with frequent travel to field locations.

Established in 2009, the Horn of Africa Multi-country Office (HAMCO) currently operates an established Operations Centre in Addis Ababa, overseeing a portfolio of engagements across four countries in the Horn of Africa: Ethiopia, Djibouti, Sudan, and South Sudan. HAMCO focuses on providing services in Infrastructure, Procurement, Project Management, HR and Transactional Services, and Fund Management, across sectors such as Health, Education, Agriculture, and Resilient Infrastructure, among others.Our goal is to support countries in need, assist communities, and empower our partners by delivering on our mandate in infrastructure, procurement, and project management throughout the Horn of Africa.Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Support Services Manager and Senior Portfolio Managers for the various intervention regions and reporting to the PMs, the incumbent will be in charge of driving, maintaining and ensuring technical activity delivery related to the Workshop truck and crane truck use in the operations area. The Truck Driver and Crane Operator (Senior Driver) provides reliable and safe driving services, crane operation and clerical support ensuring high accuracy of work. The Senior Driver demonstrates a client-oriented approach, high sense of responsibility, courtesy, tact and the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

The Truck Driver and Crane Operator (Senior Driver) provides driving services to the technical delivery teams supporting their activities in the field with the necessary logistical requirements.

Functional Responsibilities

Driving Functions

  • Ensures provision of reliable and secure driving services by a) driving the trucks for the transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of materials and equipment to site and b) drives safely enough to ensure the safe delivery of equipment and cargo to implementation sites and c) safe and correct use of the truck crane ensuring complete adherence to crane HSSE operation requirements.
  • Ensures cost-savings through proper use of trucks through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs for the preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
  • Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, crane hydraulic system etc.
  • Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts.
  • Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents.
  • Carries out daily routine checks on the truck a and follows up on scheduled maintenance of the truck.
  • Ensures there is sufficient fuel in the fuel container and checks on the level of oil and water and does refilling as needed for any other minor maintenance.
  • Reports dents, cracks, bruises, or bumps of any magnitude on the body of the truck on time.
  • Keeps tools, accessories, spare tires, and first aid kit on the truck, and makes them readily available for use and inspection/ inventory.
  • Follows up the operating condition of the truck, timely reports repair/ maintenance needs, and checks the repair of the truck before departure of the next proposed destination.
  • Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including insurance, registration, log sheet, checklist, fuel, first aid, road fund, and 3rd party certificates
  • Maintains all records related to the use of the truck such as daily log sheet, departure, time, arrival, mileage covered, fuel consumed, and other pertinent records, and submit necessary mileage-related documents to the Site Engineer regular bases.
  • Report malfunctioning or defective technical problems on the truck to the immediate supervisor and take corrective actions.
  • Location: willing to travel in all parts of operations area depending on the site activities

Crane Functions

  • Ensures complete health and safety requirements covered in operation of the truck crane.
  • Ensures regular maintenance procedures for crane operating systems such as hydraulics are completed on schedule and monitored at all times.
  • Ensures no other person operates a crane apart from specifically qualified crane operator / truck driver.
  • Ensures correct usage of the crane at all times.
  • Carries out daily routine checks on the crane and follows up on scheduled services of the crane.
  • Responsible for all ropes, chains and equipment linked to crane usage.
  • Ascertains that all tools and other accessories for the crane are handy and functional;
  • Report malfunctioning or defective technical problems on the crane to the immediate supervisor and take corrective actions.

Clerical support

  • Registering all data on a log sheet on a daily basis, like hours the crane operated, kilometers the truck travelled, fuel, oil, and lubricants consumed.
  • Submitting a weekly and monthly report of the truck and crane.

Results Expected:

  • The key result is accurate, safe and timely execution of the UNOPS technical field interventions.
  • Timely execution of delivery functions.
  • Client satisfaction based on feedback against performance and measurements.
  • The UNOPS truck/crane is always in good and serviceable condition.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education

  • Completion of secondary education is required.
  • A valid truck driver’s license with a minimum of 2nd grade level is required, please attach to the application.
  • A technical diploma in automotive mechanics is an added advantage.
  • A technical certificate in crane operation is considered an asset.

Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a driver/crane operator of heavy-duty trucks or vehicles, with a safe driving record, is required.
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, along with skills in minor vehicle repairs, is an added advantage.
  • Experience working with UNOPS is considered an asset.

Language

  • Fluency in written, spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of local languages in conflict affected areas is an advantage.
